What Skills Do You Need To Be A Business Analyst
The role of business analysts varies greatly depending on the type of business in which they work.
Most of us know the definition of a business analyst and have heard about its importance to the success of your company. But how much do you really know about the skills a business analyst needs to have?
Do you know how to speak to the stakeholders and develop strategic plans?
If you answered “Yes,” then you probably have the basic understanding of what business analysts do. However, how well do you know the job requirements?
Here are the 4 skills that I think every business analyst should have.
1. Read deeply
For any analyst, reading is a key skill, and in general, you’ll see the importance of reading for this career in the following articles:
Knowing the technical skill-set of a business analyst is very important, but being able to understand and communicate insights from the data and project that the business analysts acquire is even more important.
Since most business analysts today spend a lot of time reading and data mining, it is important to have a reading speed and a vocabulary that is understandable to anyone (with or without technical skills) working in the IT department.
Reading is a skill, so make sure that you are improving on it. The faster you are improving your reading speed, the faster you will learn.
The reading speed and vocabulary you should develop will improve your ability to read data, understand relationships, and leverage your analytical skills.
The key here is not to read so fast that you can't understand, but to understand what you read.
The thing is that, everyone should be able to read at least 2 pages in 15 minutes. That's the minimum for comprehension.
Also, even if you can't read much, start at least with the simplest text on the market. It will not only make you smarter and more knowledgeable, but will also give you a feeling of efficiency.
2. Intuitive and creative thinking
The business analyst’s role requires working on strategy, and it requires analyzing the right set of data to arrive at a conclusion. That’s where a business analyst’s creative thinking skills comes in.
The traditional methods of data analysis are usually very cumbersome. It can take months and even years to build the right strategy for your company and to determine the right path.
If your business analysts have the ability to read complex data with the appropriate tools, they are going to be able to contribute a lot to your company.
Business analysts should always be able to think out of the box and know what to do when faced with a problem.
Being able to break down complex data and to understand the relationships is a very important skills to have in a business analyst.
It will make the task easier for the business analyst to build a roadmap for the future and understand when and where to make strategic investments.
You can develop this knowledge by reading books about the topic or by doing many experiments. These two methods will help you see and understand the connections better than most people.
Another skill that business analysts need is self-motivation. This is a very important one, as business analysts have to get up and get their hands dirty to get work done.
One of the biggest problems that business analysts often face is a lack of motivation, which is caused by a lack of self-motivation.
Motivation is one of the most important skills you can learn, as it will give you a lot of power in your work.
If you can learn to motivate yourself, you will be in the best shape to help your company to grow and to keep up with the competition.
You should strive to get up at 5 a.m., go to bed at 7 p.m., and wake up at 6 a.m. every day. When you wake up, you should be completely alert and always focused.
The last thing you want is to get distracted by the email or phone alerts on your phone.
Motivation should also be very systematic.
You should try to plan ahead and to organize all your tasks as early as possible. You should have a “sprint” every day. This is a very important aspect of motivation.
For example, you can work through the following list every day:
Five hours of research, analysis, and research
One hour of testing and data collection
One hour of visualizing the data
One hour of reporting and analyzing the results
And so on. You should plan your work and plan your schedule so that you can complete the tasks and have a few hours free.
You can use this time for a variety of things, such as organizing your team, working out, or learning a new language.
4. Business communication skills
The most important thing for a business analyst is to be able to communicate. This skill is crucial, as the business analyst should work closely with the team and with the business management.
The communication skills should also be developed in other areas of the business, such as customer service and with customers.
The business analyst’s job is to build the communication link between the business managers and the team. They should be able to understand the goals and priorities and share this information in an easy-to-understand way.
You have to be able to speak, write, and edit well. Being a good speaker is a very important skill, as it will help you make the right decisions during meetings.
You should be able to clearly explain the plan and the goals and ensure that they understand the information.
When people don’t understand the information, you need to be able to provide more explanations or propose different solutions. You need to be able to effectively respond to questions, and this is a very important skill.
Being able to speak and write well will help you to improve the relationship with your team members, especially the client representatives.
One of the best ways to improve your communication skills is to practice. Try to speak at least 20 minutes a day. You should also join a Toastmasters group. This is a great way to improve your speech and to practice the fine arts.
The sixth and final skill that business analysts need is the ability to master new things. It is very common for a business analyst to spend years working with the same project.
This is often a bad thing, but it does mean that you can learn a lot of new things in that time.
